None of Us Are Free

Last night when I went to buy soup, I turned around and saw the organized rally in support of gay marriage rights. The marchers in wedding clothes were what immediately gave it away. I was so moved that I was rendered incapable of getting soup. Everyone on the sidewalk stopped and cheered, watching the marchers fill up one side of Market Street traffic.

Immediately, I got choked up. Gay men and women do not have equal rights as straights. The cause will always be worth fighting for. Hope it happens soon, it will, it will.

I saw a pair of women holding a "Still Married" sign. They saw me and I shouted "Woo!" They shouted back, and we laughed. I tried to yell "Congratulations!" but my voice cracked with emotion and nothing came out.

I tried to conceal the tears streaming down my face, still smiling at the marchers who looked at me. I clapped the whole time, which made my wedding ring and Valentine's day ring clink together which made me sad. Why am I entitled to these things when others are not?

Let's download Solomon Burke's MP3 of "None of Us are Free" with the lyrics, "None of us are free, if one of us is chained, none of us are free."
